WEEKLY SCHEDULE

SWIM TEAM
This program is typically for athletes 6 years and up. For our little swimmers, 6 and under, we have guppies! Here, the swimmers will practice 5 times a week for about an hour depending on the age group. The swim team prepares athletes for competition by focusing on stroke correction and racing strategies. Our primary focus is to ensure that all participants have fun while, at the same time, gain a sense of competitive discipline. The summer swimming season consists of 5 dual meets against other NAA pools, a divisional time trial, and the NAA championship. The league meets are held on 5 consecutive Wednesday nights, commencing the first week of July. The competitions begin about 5:30 pm and usually end up finishing by 9:00pm. The divisional time trial and championship meet are scheduled early in August.
Throughout the regular season all participants will have a chance to swim. The NAA swim team rules restrict the number of participants in each event so depending on the number of participants in any one category, swimmers may not swim each session. It is very important to advise your coach if you cannot make a meet so that we don’t lose points for empty lanes and so that we can give another swimmer an opportunity to swim.
Time Trials and the NAA Championship Big Meet
Every year, once the dual meet season is complete, the swim team shifts from the dual meet phase of the summer competition to the Finals Phase. This changes how the swim team function for the last 10 days of the season. In the dual meet phase, each meet is against only one other pool in the division in which Fairview competes. These meets are organized to allow for the maximum participation possible. In the Finals Phase Fairview will participate in a division Time Trial. In this event, we try to qualify our swimmers against not only the other 5 pools in our division but against all the NAA association pools who will be simultaneously doing the other two division Time Trials with their own sections. These Time Trials are organized so we can determine the fastest 12 swimmers for each event across the entire NAA. These 12 swimmers compete in the NAA Championship Big Meet which is held one week after the Time Trials.
For our coaches, strategy for this phase of the summer competition starts before the first week of the Dual meet season even begins. During the Time Trials, each pool can put a maximum of only 2 swimmers per age-category event. Organizing our team to put the optimum swimmers into the events is a challenging task. To do this, the coaches must consider a variety of factors including the swimmer’s best times so far during the summer and the number of swimmers who can fit into a particular category. As you might imagine, unfortunately, it’s not always possible to have every one of our athletes swim in Time Trials.
If a swimmer is part of the Time Trials, the coaches will know during the next couple of days if they have been fast enough to qualify in the top 12 swimmers for that event in their age group from across the entire NAA. Only once the results have been compiled from all 3 divisions this information is made available to each pool. We encourage all swimmers who are part of Time Trials to attend the extra swim team practices that are typically scheduled during this week.
Whether a swimmer is part of the Time Trials or the Big Meet or not, it is still important to attend the Big Meet. Swim Team is a team event and the participation of every member and the swimmers who will be in the water will be greatly encouraged by the cheering of the entire team.
There are no cost for the swim team program.
DIVING TEAM
This is a program designed to teach diving skills for all ages. Some divers start with some experience, some learn diving just during the summer. Beginning with the basics, each diver will learn proper diving techniques. As the diver improves, more difficult dives will be introduced.
The team is divided into 4 levels:
Pre-Jr (8 and under),
Junior (9-11),
Intermediate (12-14) and
Senior (15+)
In order to compete, Pre-juniors and Juniors must perform 3 dives. Intermediates must be able to perform 4 dives and at the senior level, they must be able to perform 5 dives in order to compete. It is not crucial that the young athlete join the team already knowing this fixed number of dives. Our coaches are more than happy to help them reach their diving goals! Practices are held regularly and additional practices may be scheduled depending on pool availability. Diving meets are held once per week of which the day is to be determined by the NAA at the beginning of the season. Anyone is welcome to try the diving team.
In order to be eligible for the NAA Diving Championship, a diver must finish in the top 3 in at least 3 dual meets throughout the summer. Overall, the diving team is a fun and productive way to learn how to dive and be given the chance to compete. Should you have any questions about the diving program, please feel free to ask a member of the coaching staff.
There are no cost for the swim team program.
SYNCHRONIZED SWIM TEAM
The artistic swimming program at Fairview pool is a very popular program. As with all our programs, our main priority is for everyone to have fun learning new skills and meeting new people. In order to maintain an enjoyable summer, however, it is important that we clarify the structure and expectations of each program. Assuming that the appropriate criteria are met, all individuals are welcome to be placed on one of the following synchro teams: pre-junior (10 and under), junior (13 and under) and senior team (16 and under). Depending on the number of girls, a second team in any of theses categories may need to be formed. The girls will be placed on the appropriate team based on the following criteria: Skill and athletic ability, Time available for synchro/ dedication
Pre-Junior Team(s)
There are no official “try outs” for this group. In order to participate however, individuals must be able to tread water in the deep end for a minimum of 2 minutes without coming to the side. The pre-junior team is for girls who are new to the sport of synchronized swimming and who wish to get a feel for competition and commitment. They will be required to purchase a bathing suit. Practices are held regularly. There is one competition held near the end of July on a date determined by the NAA. Due to the popularity of this team, it is asked that our young athletes unable to attend the competition and/or several of the practices, refrain from joining the team. It is difficult for the coach to teach the routine with frequent absences. It is also unfair for the girls who regularly attend practices.
Junior Team(s)
This team is for girls who are 13 years and younger. Being on the junior team requires a regular time commitment each week plus extra practices around competition time. Participants are expected at all practices and will be required to inform the coach of any absence. Participants will be required to purchase a team bathing suit. The preliminary competition is usually held at the end of July or the very beginning of August while the final competition is usually held around mid August. The date and time of these events will be announced by the appropriate coach as soon as they are made available. Sometimes younger girls with advanced synchro skills have been moved up to the senior level. Ideally, there are 8 individuals on the team.
At the Junior level, there are also duet and solo competitions. We are allowed one solo and one duet entry in the summer competitions. Of course, an athlete who is on both the team and either the duet or solo will require an additional time commitment.
Senior Team(s)
Seniors are 16 years and younger. At this level, the swimming is more intricate, elaborate, and complicated. It is physically more demanding and requires about a regular time commitment plus additional practices around competition time. Participants are expected at every practice and will be required to notify the coach of any absence.
The Senior duet and solo will be chosen based on the same criteria. Being part of the team plus a duet or solo requires an additional time commitment on behalf of the swimmer.
The preliminary competition will be against other pools in the same division. The final competition will be divided according to junior and senior in which all divisions of the NAA will compete against one another on two different days.
WATERPOLO TEAM
The Water Polo team is divided as follows:
- Mixed 12 and under
- 14 & Under Girls
- 16 & Under Girls
- 14 & Under Boys
- 16 & Under Boys
Players under the age of 14 can play in both categories, while those over the age of 14 may only play in the 16 & under category.
We welcome all that wish to join, and no one is under obligation to stay. We encourage people to come and see what Water Polo is all about! Practices are held regularly. While practice times are set, the players are welcome to ask coaches for extra help. If players cannot make a practice or a game, they are expected to notify their coach as far in advance as possible. The season consists of dual meets and, if we qualify, Playoffs and the Championship Finals.
There is also an annual Water Polo competition between the best teams of the NAA and our neighbor association ALPS called Quebec Games which is hosted by Dollard Water Polo. Should we qualify in one of the 4 categories we will be able to compete against the best Water Polo athletes of the West Island!
In addition, there is an opportunity for those 12 and under to participate in the annual 12 and under Water Polo Tournament. Teams for that competition can be mixed gender.
GUPPIES
Our Guppies program is perfect for little swimmers ages 6 and under who are learning the basics and getting ready to join the swim team. It’s a fun-filled introduction to swimming that includes games, skill-building, and plenty of splashing around! Guppies also get to participate in special Guppies meets during the Summer, giving them a chance to show off their progress and enjoy the excitement of race day in a fun, low-pressure setting.
